The most memorable thing that I have learned from this class is actually something I did not expect from it. During the disorders section when we talked about anxiety disorder, I realized that it may be something I deal with. People have told me it may be ADD or something similar. Until the symptoms and discussion in class about anxiety disorder I did not really care. Now I realize that I should care. I have had troubles studying, focusing, and dealing with constant stress. Because of the class, I talked to some of my fraternity brothers about my thoughts and one of them suggested I go to the schools wellness center and talk to someone one a regular basis. He said it helps him a lot in dealing with his stress. I think that I am going to try doing it next semester foe at least a while. If it can help me in my life then it can hopefully in turn help me with school. I need to stop bottling things up and learn to deal with them. It is the main reason I have trouble focusing and am struggling in school. I never expected I would learn this in a Psych 101 class, but there is a first time for everything.

One issue I had with the class was the vast amount of information covered in the semester. I know it was an intro class, but there was a lot to remember. I also did not expect it to be so scientifically structured and taught like a history class.  Regardless of how I thought it should be, I should have applied myself harder to the course material. It was, overall, a very interesting course on the insight to how and why some people think and at in the manners they do. Hopefully I can take what I have learned in this class and use it in my future to help me and others in life.

Blog 7 Psych Song

“The Six Reasons We Like Music” article was a very interesting read. I agree with all but one of the reasons based on the reasons I listen to music. I, however, do not agree with the order. I have never listened to music to understand others or the world, but I have listened for the other five reasons. Of the remaining reasons, negative mood management is my number one followed by diversion and positive mood management. The reason negative mood management is my highest is because I listen to music do distract me from my life struggles and to relieve stress. With college and finances having such a huge factor in my life, music is a necessity for me to forget all the bad and relax. I also listen to music while doing homework and cleaning. It helps me stay focused and get things done. Music also puts me in a happy mood and makes life seem even better.

“I Hate Everything About You” by Three Days Grace

Every time we lie awake

After every hit we take

Every feeling that I get
But I haven’t missed you yet

Every roommate kept awake
By every sigh and scream we make
All the feelings that I get
But I still don’t miss you yet

Only when I stop to think about it

I hate everything about you
Why do I love you?
I hate everything about you
Why do I love you?

Every time we lie awake
After every hit we take
Every feeling that I get
But I haven’t missed you yet

Only when I stop to think about it

I hate everything about you
Why do I love you?
I hate everything about you
Why do I love you?

Only when I stop to think about you,
I know Only when you stop to think about me,
do you know?

I hate everything about you
Why do I love you?
You hate everything about me
Why do you love me?

I hate
You hate
I hate
You love me

I hate everything about you
Why do I love you?

The kind of Psychological idea this song demonstrates is a love hate relationship. The love hate relationship stems from and affects many other psychological concepts. They are listed as: Human sexuality, principles of sensation and perception, vision, hearing, other senses, intelligence, motivation, need to belong, emotion and all its elements, stress and health, happiness, social thinking, influence, and relation. There are so many things interconnected in this little love hate relationship. In a sense the song covers all kinds of psychological ideas. Love hate relationships are affected by all factors. Vision, hearing, and the other senses will apply to your partner’s looks, voice, skin, scent, and other features. Intelligence will apply to how a couple learn about and from each other. Motivation and need to belong are simple. They affect your mind set on what level of dislike you will put up with to stay together. This usually goes along with very co-dependent people. Those who have such a high neediness to belong and have someone that they will settle for anything. Being in a relationship like that will mess with emotions of all kind and cause false feelings and lead to stress and decreased
healthiness. Your social thinking and influences of those around you will affect how you view your relationship and what happiness really is. Bottom line this song is about a guy who can’t seem to find anything he likes about this girl that he keeps going back to. He claims to love her, but cannot for the life of him think of one thing he likes about her.

The term I chose to look further into was heuristics. I chose this because I thing the word’s spelling looks interesting and is a large part of the current topic we are studying.

Here is a link to a blog about heuristics: http://www.developsense.com/blog/2012/04/heuristics-for-understanding-heuristics/

This blog talks about a man trying use various heuristics to explain to another person what heuristics are. First he tried using a straight definition approach. When that did no work he explained it more. He then compared heuristics to an algorithm and told him that an algorithm is nothing other than a heuristic for solving a potential math problem of a type that worked in the past. Afterwards, the man told him about two books that could help explain as well. The last step he used was to as the man for an example of a heuristic of his own.

This article relates to the class in that it helps explain what a heuristic is, how one works, and has a few examples to help understand. One example that I enjoyed what the one concerning engineers. Engineers use heuristics all the time in the industry. When we need to figure out a solution we think of a similar situation in which we already came up with an answer. We then use the same approach to find a solution to our new problem. Though the approach may work it does not guarantee a correct answer. It is a heuristic and heuristics are simply a rule or a way to help solve a problem quicker if you do not already know how.

Blog Two NOLA

Sensation refers to the process of sensing our environment through touch, taste, sight, sound, and smell. Perceptions are how we interpret these sensations. Fore example tasting a true New Orleans Jambalaya Pasta for the first time. First comes the sensation of tasting it. then comes the perception of how it tastes.

Signal Detection They is your ability or likelihood to detect a stimulus, is affected by the intensity  of the stimulus and your physical and psychological  state. For example, the first time a person feeds a sting ray at the NOLA Aquarium. He may find the feeling much more weird or funny than a guy who has done it multiple times.

Top-Down Processing is also known as “large chunk” processing and states that we  form perceptions by starting with the larger concept or  ideas and then working our way  down to the finer details of that concept or idea. For example, When you see a beautiful building and then you slowly start noticing the even more beautiful designs in the building.

Parallel processing is the ability of the brain to do many things at once. For example when you see a baby sea turtle waving at you. you don’t just see a turtle, you also look at its colors, shapes, and movements to understand it better.

Opponent Process Theory is where emotional reactions to a stimulus are followed by opposite emotional reactions. For example when you go on a first date with a girl and instead of being happy and excited, you are nervous and scared. Then after it is over you feel relived maybe.
